A qualitative research on social media use habits in the Corona virus process of 65 ages and over
Abstract
At the end of 2019, some precautions were taken when the epidemic disease called COVID-19 (coronavirus), which was first seen in Wuhan, China, then spread to the whole world and became a global epidemic, was also seen in our country. One of these measures is the prohibition of individuals aged 65 and over, who are stated to have low resistance to the virus, from going out. The aim of this study is to understand whether there is any change in internet and social media usage habits and motivations of individuals aged 65 and over who have a curfew while they are at home. In this study, in which qualitative research method was employed and in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 participants aged 65 and over who use internet and social media applications, it was concluded that social media and internet applications became the only tools that provide social communication and needs rather than arbitrary use in extraordinary times such as pandemics. It is among the prominent findings that the use of social media has increased significantly compared to the pre-pandemic period and that some participants have social media literacy qualities.
